W-Five "unsafe to teach"

On Sunday evening I watched a program on W-Five called "Unsafe To Teach". The program was about the bullying and abuse that teachers face. It was kind of scary, but had many great points about the issue.

One point made was the fact that maybe the students have more rights then the teacher. Teachers are being disrespected and they believe this is learned in the home. Learning by experience.
It is really scary to think that you may be mentally and physically abused in your work place. Work is suppose to be a safe place.

I believe the evolution of human beings. I believe that we need to create class rooms that provide tolerance and adaptability to these new indigo and crystal children. They learn differently and act differently so we as teachers need to adapt and teach they way they learn.

There were a few teachers on the program, that had the old ideas of teaching, the idea of authority etc.... This will not work on these children because they do not care about authority. We need to figure out how to work with these children.

Hi Alicia, I wish I would have seen that program. It sounds as if it was one all teachers (future included) should watch. I do agree that alot of the learning of respect comes from home. Not always, but parenting does play a large part. I think for alot of these kids it may be more of a lack of parenting that is affecting them. Parents that work 2 or 3 jobs to make ends meet and just the fact that we are all so busy all of the time, maybe enough time is not spent with these kids. I think that when your learners realize that you are there to create a safe and nurturing environment for them and that you are no better than they are, there will be respect there. Sometimes I think that teachers may have the preconceived notion that all learners are disrespectful and we don't even give them the chance. We as teachers need to come down to their level is necessary and show them that we to are human. It won't be an easy task!
